The Blues on Beale Street

Jon, Dan and I headed down to the infamous Beale St. Downtown to hear the Blues. As the movie goes, 'No one gets out of here without singing the blues', but since we were with Dan, thankfully we did (Today is Dan's b-day, so we took the appropriate care of him).

St. Jude's Hospital

We finally got a chance to see where Beth is doing her fellowship at The Danny Thomas St. Jude Cancer Research Hospital. Beth took us on a tour and we got a chance to see the artwork, with each area being custom painted for the kids and some of the kids artwork is displayed.

Jon and Dan screwing

Dan has been helping Jon with projects around the house and I've been working on Jon and Beth's computers. According to Kris, Dan isn't very good at screwing or hammering, but he's very good at sawing.

The Peabody

We came downtown to The Peabody to see the famous march of the ducks at 5:00. The ducks march from the fountain, through the lobby and up the elevator to their palace on the roof.

Emily and Zoe

Jon and Beth have two weiner dogs that have finally been socialized enough not to bite the kids, much to Emily's delight. The girls have been playing with the dogs like their own personal puppies. The girls haven't put them down yet.

June Bugs

Memphis has these giant Circadia bugs, about two inches long that chirp very loudly all night. They're creepy looking things, but over time I trained this one to sit on my shoulder and do tricks.

The 'ol Miss and the little Miss

Walkin in Memphis

We went downtown to the Mississippi Riverwalk, a to-scale replica of the old lady, complete with bridges and towns. It's about 100 degrees out and the kids can walk in the mock river the whole way down.

Corky's in Memphis

We got into Memphis yesterday afternoon around 4:30 and went to Corky's BBQ, which are hands down the best Ribs I've ever had. Dan and Kris are staying at a nearby DoubleTree, so we went over there swimming and then came back to Jon's, hung out for a while and then crashed by about 10. The kids were beat after the early morning.

Vacation Montage

Here's a 3 minute synopsis on what we did last week, all put to music:

Ted & Sherry

Our friends Ted and Sherry have a beautiful boy Ethan, and were recently thrilled to find out that they were pregnant with number two. We got a call tonight to hear that they've had a miscarriage. Cathie and I have been through this a few times and it sucks, it hurts and it's something that sticks with you for life. Please pray for Ted and Sherry.

Vacation #2 at the Butcrack of Dawn

I'm heading to bed. I'm getting up at 4:30 AM to be out the door by 5AM and on the way to Memphis with Dan and his family. It's a 12 hour drive, so the early start should help us. The kids are stocked up on books and videos to entertain them while I've got my iPod charged up and ready to go. I rigged up Nate's PS2 to a dual screen system in the back so he and his cousins can play video games while the girls watch movies on the ceiling mounted player.

When I was a kid, we had a buick with 6 people in it and we traveled down to Florida 24 hours straight. No video games, no ipods, nothing but each other to fight with and entertain ourselves with. Wish us luck.

We get back on Sunday evening.

Ted at Colbert

I've been telling my friend Ted that he needs to do something worthwhile to make my blog and he's finally done it. Through back channel connections Ted was able to score tickets to see the taping of the Daily Show Spin-Off 'The Colbert Report' with Stephen Colbert. It's showing tonight on Comedy Central, so set your Tivos to tape.

Rays Family Blog

The Rays family now has a blog. With five boys, there is never a dull moment. As my kids put it when they found out they have there very own slurpee machine, "Dad, they must be millionares or billionares!" Not sure about that, but if Nate turns out as well as the Rays boys have, I'll be a happy Dad.

Vacation

We had a fantastic vacation at Will's roommate's (Mom) cottage. Linda has a fantastic place in Shelby, MI right off Lake Michigan. It's a fantastic cottage that sleeps 12+ in the woods. The cottage is 10 minutes South of Silver Lake Sand Dunes, and about 20 minutes North of Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park. You can sit on the deck and not hear a sound other than crickets chirping and the wind blowing through the trees and at night you're remote enough that you can see more stars than you new existed.

We arrived on Friday afternoon along with our friends the Niemi's. They have three kids about the same age as our kids, one boy and two girls. The kids had a blast playing together wherever they were. Friday, Saturday and Sunday we hung out at the beaches during the day and in the evening went . The kids slept in until 9 each morning, which was great. We spent the mornings drinking coffee and hanging out, the days at the beach and the evenings watching the sunsets at the beach followed by a camp fire.

At some point, a dog wandered over to Linda's cottage who according to his tag was named Roy. You'd of thought the kids had never seen a dog before. They got the dog water and he followed them around as they hiked through the woods. The dog was there for maybe two hours tops, and we must have heard 30 times through the rest of vacation, "I miss Roy."
On Sunday, Mark and I took the boys over to the Silver Lake Dunes to bleed off some energy. The boys had been having these water-noodle sword fights the past few days and had been asking non-stop about when we were going to the dunes, so they could have a water-noodle fight on top of the dunes. They finally had their battle. We climbed to the top of the highest, steepest dune and ran 100+ yards straight down into the lake.

Backing up to Linda's cottage is this giant hill. Saturday evening, the boys and I climbed the hill and decided we'd navigate our way over to the Lake Michigan through the woods, using nothing but our Y chromosome. It was a hike, but we made it without getting lost... Kind of. We ended up coming out of the woods at the Lake, but not sure how to get back. We could have/should have cut through the yards to the lake, walked until we found our way back. Instead, we followed the road we didn't know all the way around, back into town and back to the cottage - about 4+ miles total. The boys slept well that night.

On Monday the Niemi's headed home and the five of us went to Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park in Muskegon. It's a fantastic park for the price. $24 admission gets you into both the water park and the amusement park and it takes about a day to hit them both. They've got a bunch of good roller coasters and a ton of rides that work for big and little kids. Nate and Madeline are both tall enough to ride all of the coasters there and they both love them. They've got a wicked wooden roller coaster called Shivering Timbers. I'm not sure if it still is, but at one point it was the longest wooden roller coaster around. In true wooden coaster style, it beats the crap out of you. Here's video of Maddie riding Shivering Timbers. Watch her expression as the ride progresses:

We had a beautiful day at the park, hitting the rides, spending about 4 hours in the water park, and then back to the coasters. We got home around 8, grilled out and then had a fire. We spent today at the beach and then came back and packed up and headed home. We stopped by to see my Mom and then got home around 9. It was a great vacation, but not quite long enough.

I almost hate to tell anyone about Linda's cottage because it's such a hidden treasure. She rents it out and I highly recommend it for a family vacation, or even a weekend getaway for couples. If you're interested, you can drop Linda a note here about availability. The place is perfect beautiful year round.

You can see the rest of the vacation pictures here in the Kurt Family Photo Album.

Update on my Mom

Here's the latest update on my Mom from my Dad:
We were very disappointed to learn from the latest CT scan that some new spots were apparent on the liver. In March, spots on the liver were found, but they were infection and near as could be determined, not malignant. We were hoping for the same this time, thinking infection is easier to treat. However, we learned that the spots on the liver are malignant.

We have spent the last two weeks waiting for our oncologists (one at Sparrow Regional Cancer Center in Lansing and the other at U of M Regional Cancer Clinic in Ann Arbor) to determine the best course of action. We learned today that Lynn will begin receiving two chemo treatments simultaneously- one by pill twice daily and the other by infusion once every three weeks. A port will be surgically implanted later this week for this infusion.

This will not be easy for Lynn as they both have serious side affects; nausea, loss of appetite, hair loss, loss of taste, etc. Lynn has been such an inspiration to all of us for her determination to beat this cancer. We pray that this is the treatment that will put this cancer in remission.

Lynn started physical therapy at home a couple weeks ago. She does some stretching and muscle building exercises. She is very dedicated to doing this on a daily basis even though she becomes very sore from doing them.

Happy Anniversary

Fourteen years ago today, Cathie and I were married at the MSU Alumni Chapel. I was in my senior year at MSU studying Computer Science and Cathie had just graduated with a degree in Family/Community Services and had gotten her first job with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. We honeymooned in New Smyrna Beach, FL as Hurricane Andrew destroyed Miami.

Cathie and I were talking tonight about everything that's gone on over the past fourteen years, including:
  • I've had three jobs (MSU IM Dept, ASG and Xerox) and Cathie has had two jobs(Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Metro Detroit and Clinton County)
  • We've lived in 5 places (University Village, Burnt Tree Apts in EL, Apts in Novi, house in Livonia and our house in South Lyon.
  • We've had 5 different pets (2 cats, a dog, 1 guinea pig - and a bunch of fish, which are barely pets)
  • We've been members at one church (Crossroads, for 12 years)
  • We've had three amazing children (Nate 9, Madeline 8, Emily 5)
  • Both of our parents are still happily married and continue to be great role models for us on what love for a lifetime looks like
  • We have 7 nieces and nephews
  • All of my brothers, my sister and Cathie's brother Ed are now married. My adopted brother Will is close, we hope.
  • We've had two roommates (Will for 2 months and Jess for a year)
  • I've taken approximately 100,000 pictures
  • Cathie has completed one photo scrapbook
Most of all, I've fallen deeper in love with Cathie than I ever thought possible. I've learned what it means to be connected with another person at a soul level. I've learned to and serve my wife and honor her in everything I do and say. I am married to my best friend in the whole world and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with her. Cathie's grandparents just celebrated their 60th anniversary, my parents their 40th and Cathie's are coming up on their 37th - all of which seem an eternity, but all amazing examples to us on what a lifelong commitment looks like.

Kandra and Kevin

There's an ongoing joke at work that one of my friends and co-workers, Greg Kandra looks just like Kevin Covais from American Idol. I got this e-mail today, picturing Greg and his son. The resemblance is striking.

Vacation

I get home tonight around 2AM from Seattle and then leave tomorrow on
vacation. I've got my e-mail box cleaned out and I'm ready to take a
break. My internal clock is already off by three hours, so I'll be
golden for vacation. I'll be blogging from my phone if the cell
coverage works on the west side of the state. We're staying at Will's
Mom's cottage out in the Whitehall area. We're going to spend 5 days
hanging out at the lake, going to the dunes and spending time as a
family. On Tuesday we're heading to Michigan Adventure Amusement Park
for the day. It's the best option for $20/person. You get
roller-coasters and a water park, all in the same day.

Gary Player in the sand

Tom Kite at Greater Seattle Classic

We took a customer to the Greater Seattle Classic today and watched the Pro-Am event. It was pretty laid back and we had a chance to talk to some of the players and hosts. As we watched one hole, one of the amateurs accidentally shanked a line drive right at the pro, who just barely dodged it. As his caddie approached us a minute later he said, "That would have been worth the price of admissionm huh? Seeing a pro get hit in the nuts?"

On our way to the next hole one of the guys riding in the cart started talking to us, thanking us for coming out. It turns out it was Alan Mulally, the President of Boeing. Nice guy. Had no idea who he was as we talked.

After it cleared up, the scenery was beautiful. We got to see a number of big name players, like Gary Player, Tom Kite, JC Snead and Jim Colbert.

Fish Chucking at Pike Street Market

Travel Tip #3379

If you choose not to check your luggage and not remember to buy shaving cream, here's a tip:
They say that shampoo can double as shaving cream. "They" lie. Ouch.

My Steps

I may falter in my steps, but never beyond your reach.
-Rich Mullins, "Sometimes by Step"

I got up around 5 to go running and hit the gym. There are some fairly big, long hills in downtown Seattle, and I kept running finding them. This song came on my iPod and that line really struck me.

The Church can change the world

In church on Sunday during Fusion (our junior high youth group) we were talking about the purpose of the church. We looked at the early church in the book of Acts and talked through why the church exists. These junior high kids get it in a pretty impressive way. Their big takeaway form the whole thing was the point that "The church can change the world", (for the better) and each kid had to make sure they explained this point to our pastor.

I'd read this article that Will referenced and I've been thinking a lot lately on what the church's role is in politics. How should the church engage political systems in order to have an impact, without trying to hoard power for itself and become the political system it's trying to influence. On the flight out to Seattle, I was listening to this message from Rob Bell (Mars Hills Church in Grand Rapids) on Politics and the Church. The biggest part that hit me was this quote from Rob
The church exists primarily for the well being of everyone who is not a part of her.
-Rob Bell
There's this scary opinion out there of people that say, "In order to really be a Christian, you must hold the same political beliefs as I do, because I care more about this area than you do, and that makes me more of a christian."

Rob talks about the role of the church in politics, but also what unity looks like in a church with differing opinions. He gets into Galatians 3 and Ephesians 2:15 around unity:
What if we could be the kind of church where in a broken, fractured culture where there are all of these debates, opinions and television networks devoted to people ripping each other's head's off, What if we could be the kind of church where the protestor and the solider came together at the cross saying, "We have a bunch of things that we disagree on, but between us we have the resurrected Jesus and that's bigger and that's better. " What if the church could be the kind of place these people socially, economically, educationally, politically are all over the spectrum but they have this unity that can't be explained and it's so powerful."

Great message. I don't have any real conclusion here. More just that I'm thinking some of it through.

Nate's Bad Teeth

Nate's spending the night at a friend's house tonight as a part of a birthday party. I just got this picture via e-mail from the parent hosting the event. Thanks Jen! This kind of picture makes a parent proud.

Seattle at Dusk

Romans 12

I Read Romans 12 this morning. Wow.
9-10Love from the center of who you are; don't fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.

11-13Don't burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.

14-16Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they're happy; share tears when they're down. Get along with each other; don't be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don't be the great somebody.

17-19Don't hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you've got it in you, get along with everybody. Don't insist on getting even; that's not for you to do. 'I'll do the judging,' says God. 'I'll take care of it.'

20-21Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he's thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don't let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.

Pike Street Market

I got up early and met up with John, my co-worker who came in from Hawaii at 5am. We hoofed it around town to get some coffee (there is a coffee shop every ten feet) and I was hoping to see some fish tossing at the market, but it was too early. It's overcast and cold, but it's a cool downtown.

Seattle

My flight was delayed, so a 5 hour flight turned into 6 hours on the plane. I slept just long enough that I'm wide awake. Guess that's one way to deal with Jet Lag. At least I was upgraded to first class on the way out here. One of my co-workers gets in at 5AM tomorrow morning from Hawaii after flying all night. At least I'm not him.

Ignorance

We had a board meeting last night for Project 311. It's a good board, made up of a diverse collection of guys from all sorts of backgrounds. We were talking before we got down to business and one of the board members, Tim, was sharing a couple of stories on the impact of prejudice from his childhood and how it impacts him today. Tim is black. He was telling a story about how someone had talked with his son, where this guy had referred to his son as 'boy'. I asked the question, 'Is that bad?' Tim explained to me that the word 'boy' carries a lot of baggage in the black community dating back to the way slave-owners would refer to their slaves. He told me that in the ranking of names, 'boy' is worse than calling someone a nigger. I had no clue. Another good reason why diversity in a team is a good thing. I saw a statistic recently that South Lyon is 96% white. I think that number is generous based on what I've seen.

Does this make me a metrosexual?

I'm in the airport flying to Seattle and I hate checking my luggage. With the new rules in effect, I can't bring hair gel or toothpaste. Toothpaste isn't a big deal - I can get that at the front desk of my hotel when I check in. What I can't get is hair gel, which my hair needs to not look goofy. I took a tiny bottle of lotion, emptied it, filled it with hair gel and stuck it in my suitcase. If they nabbed it during security, no big deal. I made it through. I probably broke several laws, but since the tube isn't full of nitroglycerin, I don't feel too bad. The sad part of all of this is the extent I'll go through to sneak my hair gel on board and not have to check my luggage.

Bahama Bob's Party

Saturday, after helping Ed & Stacy move, we got ready for a big party at Bahama Bob's cabana. Our friends, Bob and Ann Rays had a big party in their back yard, complete with Cabana, Frozen Drinks and a Steel Drum Band. Over the past few years, Bob has been building and expanding on a cabana in his back yard by his pool. He's added a fireplace, multiple flat-screen TVs, couches, a bar, etc. When I told my kids he'd added a slurpee machine, their response was, "Dad, Bob much be the richest man we know. He must be a millionaire or a billionaire." Bob loves to have parties and he's great at it. This party was his best yet.

We all got happy feet throughout the evening.

The band was amazing. They interacted great with the crowd, having dance contests, hula-hoop contests and they even let Bob, Brad and I sing a little Bob Marley ("Don't worry, 'bout a ting....Everything little ting... Gonna be alright.") My looked beautiful, and I think we actually matched.

At one point, I got dragged into the middle for a hip-shaking dance contest. Not my strong-suite. I felt dumb, and the pictures confirm it. My face in one picture looks like I'm trying to poop, while the picture below looks like I'm doing the robot dance.

We had a great time. We had a lot of friends there (yes, I'm including you in that Rudy) and we laughed a lot and we all even made it to church the next morning (almost all).

The Moving Debacle

The Kurt family (My fam, Will & Dan)showed up today to help Cathie's brother Ed and wife Stacy move. They had most of the stuff in 'boxes', except for the stuff that wasn't. There was a mix-up with the moving truck, so we started moving stuff to the front of the house to be ahead of the game when it arrived. Dan and Will decided that it would be easier to lounge around and give each other rub-downs instead of pitching in. The truck never showed, so they felt justified in their slothfulness.

Ever seen one of those waterfall murals in the mall kiosks that are backlit and kind of look like they're moving? Dan's holding one of those. It happens to be cracked, but Ed didn't want to let go of it in the move, because he's holding out hope that he'll eventually get a new piece of glass for it. The rest of the lawn is covered in boxes. After we found out we weren't getting a truck today, we loaded the rest of the stuff in the garage so they could finish clearing out the house. If Dan and Will had their way, we would have just sat around and done nothing. It's sad that my father never raised them better.

Digital Camera

My Canon Digital 350XT Digital Rebel is dead again. About a month ago, it started getting an ERR 99 and wouldn't take pictures. I took it back to Best Buy as part of the service plan and received it about 3 weeks later. It took a few weeks to get it back and after using it a few times, I figured out today that it still has the SAME PROBLEM. I took it into Best Buy, explained the situation, and that I was getting ready to go on vacation and really wanted to have a camera. They told me I would have to take it in 4 times for repair before they will decide to replace it. I'm not happy. My sister-in-law is an attorney so i'm going to see if she has some magic she can work here.

Friday, August 11, 2006

I made it home last night about 10:45PM, but the important thing is that I made it home after four days of travel.

I was thrilled to see Cathie and the kids - and my repaired iPod back from Best Buy. They fixed the click-wheel on the thing and put a nice shiny new face plate on it. It's my 2nd time sending it off for repair as part of it's service contract. After the third time in for repair, they will replace it - with a nice new color iPod. It's all about timing.

Air Travel

They've banned all liquids on flights, based on the recent terrorist activity. For me, this means that I had to leave behind my shampoo, shaving cream and hair gel. For my brother Dan, this will mean leaving behind many lotions, candles, oils and waxes that he travels with.

My flight is delayed by almost an hour so far due to storms. The Kansas City Airport I'm in is screwy. Once you go through security, you have no restrooms or restaurants without going back through security. At least I'm getting home tonight.

I just wanna go home

Remember the picture of four airline staff gathered around a terminal trying to figure out my ticket? I'm sure they meant well, but somehow they canceled my return flight back from Kansas City - a flight which is now sold out. When I didn't get any notification on my flight status, I figured I'd call just to be safe. I went online and it showed that my flight had been canceled. I called initially and the first customer service rep was one of the meanest I've ever talked to, and then she transitioned into talking to me like a 4 year old - and this was on their elite hot-line. I hung up, called back and found someone else to help me. I no longer have my first class seat, but at least I'm getting home tonight.

Congratulations, Deal Again?

While waiting to board my flight, I won a game of solitaire on my phone. This is probably the third time ever, and the first time in at least 10 years. My family must be so proud.

MC Plus+

Will turned me on to this Computer Science Rapper called MC Plus+ (named after the programming language C++). Your average geek won't even appreciate this stuff. You need a computer science degree to fully enjoy this, with songs like Computer Science for Life using terms like two-phase lock-in and "i'm in the lab and i'm coding all night, project won't compile it'll be alright, computer science for life, that's my direction, instead of being bold, my homies throw exceptions" (Warning: Some language not suitable for your Mom)

Maddie Lost Her Tooth

Maddie lost her first tooth today, with a little help from her big brother. Nate tied a string to her tooth, the other end to the door - and slammed it. The tooth went flying and was lost temporarily until Cathie found it in a shoe. I talked to Nate today and he explained to me that if this didn't work, he was going to tie the string to the fan and turn it on.

Oaklahoma City

It's 106 and flat here. I haven't gotten into my hotel before midnight and been up early every morning, on the go all day and night until I get to my hotel. I'm beat. I'm on the road next week Monday through Thursday in Seattle and then we're going on vacation Friday -Tuesday, out to Will's Mom's cottage.

Ministering With New Maturity

Good Washington Post article on Youth Ministry: Ministering With New Maturity:
"The philosophy dominating the business today is 'relational' ministry, which means not so much using teen lingo or dressing cool but spending quality time with young people and understanding the morally nuanced, complex world in which they live. "

GPS Found

My wife tells me that I'm the world's worst looker, but in this case, it doesn't apply. Really. I searched my rental car high and low for my GPS receiver. The thing is about half the size of a pack of cigarettes, so there aren't too many places to hide. I keep it either on the dashboard or in a cup holder, so where can this thing hide? I'd given up hope of finding it today and finally decided, what the heck, I'll pray for it. I felt stupid praying for something so insignificant, but I figured God cares about the small stuff in the same way that as a Dad, I care about the small stuff in my kids life and I help my kids when they lose stuff. So here was my prayer:
"God, I know this is dumb, and I'm probably wasting your time, but could you help me find my GPS receiver? I'm not holding my breath, but thanks for any help in advance."

Real prayer of faith, huh? I did one more search of my car before heading to the airport. I looked in every nook and cranny again. Nothing. As I'm driving in my car, I look down at the floor below me is the receiver. Right in the middle of the floor. I have no idea where it came from. It amazes me that even after that, I'm so ready to write it off as a coincidence. Anyways, I found it right after I'd ordered a replacement unit. Anyone want to buy a Bluetooth GPS receiver?

Wake Up

I've got 3 hours to kill before my flight. My iPod is on, my laptop is open and I'm dozing off. The woman next to me keeps waking me up, telling me she doesn't want me to miss my flight. I nicely explain that it's not for another three hours and I just want a nap. She explains that someone may steal my luggage, so I happily explain that they're welcome to it if they want it that badly. I tell her I could really use a nap and try and go back to sleep and she responds that I should go visit Starbucks to get some coffee to stay awake. I'm not sure she heard a word I said. I think she meant well.

People are Lonely

CNN.com - Lonely nation - Aug 6, 2006: Good article about how disconnected people are in America.
"In June, an authoritative study in the American Sociological Review found that the average American had only two close friends in whom they would confide on important matters, down from an average of three in 1985. The number of people who said they had no such confidant soared from 10 percent in 1985 to nearly 25 percent in 2004; an additional 19 percent said they had only one confidant -- often their spouse."

The Lazer

I heard a commercial on the radio in topeka, KS that made me laugh:
97.3, The Laser.. The Choice for cool moms everywhere.

Flight Problems

Storms in Texas delayed my flight to Oaklahoma via Houston so that I wouldn't of made my meeting tomorrow. It took an four very helpful Continental reps to figure out that I should fly out how to get me there on time via Southwest. I now leave 3 hours later, have a direct flight and get in an hour sooner, just not in first class. I can live with that.

Velocity 2006 Video

After all of our big youth group outings, we try and have a video that gives the rest of the church a taste of what went on. It also gives me a chance to get some music played that I want to hear in church. This year's video included the Foo Fighter's song No Way Back, which fit very well.

Lately, I've been
Livin' in my head
The rest of me is dead,
I've (I'm) dying for truth.

Make me, believe,
No more left and right,
Come on take my side,
I'm fightin' for you,
I'm fightin' for you.

I used my mac mini for this, which worked beautifully. I sold my current mac mini to a friend of mine so I can get the latest, greatest. The one I have only has 256 MB of memory and starts to choke when I get too many things going at once. The new intel based devices are faster and have more memory, which will be nice, plus they have a remote sensor on the front for multi-media stuff like iTunes and iDVD.

GPS Lost

I depend pretty heavily on my GPS to get me around. I show up in a new town, have no idea where I'm going most of the time, except for an address or hotel name. I punch it into my GPS and away I go. Works great, unless I don't have GPS.

I'm in Kansas City right now and last night, around 11:15PM I was getting ready to head to my hotel when I noticed that my GPS receiver had been stolen from my car. I have no idea who would want it, or exactly when it was taken, but it's gone. It's about $100 to replace, and I was ticked, not to mention very lost. The Valet sent me on a wild goose chase, and the late night receptionist had no idea how to get me to the hotel from where I was at. An hour later, I made it to my hotel. I fly into Oklahoma City tonight, and I'm just hoping I can find my hotel from the airport. I've ordered a new one and hope I have it in time for Seattle next week.

Chad Vader

Thanks to Dan for this. Very, very funny.

I remember when Will tried dressing up as Darth Vader to do his social work job. Didn't work as well as you think. Episode 2 is here.

Sunday

Church this morning was great. Shinn taught and we had a baptism. One of the high school guys in church who's had a life I wouldn't wish on anyone was baptized, along with his new son. In the middle of Shinn's message, someone's cell phone rang, a new person, and Shinn commented on it. I was curious if J had shut off his cell phone, so I called it. He hadn't. It rang. Loudly. For 30 seconds. Until Jess ran up, found it in J's bag and shut it off. I was amused. Very amused.

After church, the kids and I met up with my brother Dan and the kids at a nearby lake that they have a membership at. It's a private lake in the middle of some farmer's corn field that they pay an annual fee to use. Dan explained to me that it was clothing optional after 2pm. Boy was I embaressed to find out that he was only kidding.

Cathie got back this afternoon from her weekend at my parents with the girls. The kids were thrilled to see her. I wish I could say the house was immaculate. I'd planned on cleaning it today before Cathie got home, but instead we went swimming and I didn't get a chance to do much with it (see my earlier theory on not cleaning the house throughout the time Cathie's gone, and instead cleaning it all at once). I take off tomorrow for four days in the heart land. I go to Kansas City, then to Oaklahoma City and back to Kansas City.

A Knight's Tale

I watched the movie A Knight's Tale again last night. I think the main reason I like it is because I can use the word anachronism (which I learned in high school english rarely have the chance to use) to describe it's use of contemporary music. I often preface the anachronism with the word "Actually", in true Will Brown style. The word "Actually" originated from Will in conversations to tell the other person, "I am about to say something that is very intelligent and goes against your small minded understanding of the given subject."

Talladega Nights

My Dad, Dan, Kevin, Will, myself and all nine of the kids met up in Brighton and my Dad took us all to see the movie Barnyard. We then came back to our house for pizza and to hang out. My nephew Drew is spending the night. Will hung out afterwards and we hung out talking. Emily took full advantage of Uncle Will being there and conned him into playing a few games with her and reading her a bedtime story.

Rock Climbing

Maddie has been saving for a while to get a pair of Healy's and she finally has enough money. We went up to Dick's Sporting Goods today and Nate, Madeline and Emily all went rock climbing. Madeline made it all the way to the top (80 feet), Nate made it about 2/3rds of the way and Emily made it about 25 feet up. All of them had a blast. I'm amazed at the strength Maddie has developed from gymnastics. The team training stuff she's been doing this summer (3 hrs x 2 days a week) is pretty grueling, but it pays off for her.

Good News on Nate

The good news is that Nate's procedure went well this morning. He came out of the anesthesia fine and the doctor thinks that based on what he's seen, the new treatment should have things cleared up in the next few weeks.

Personality Profile

I found this personality profile on Will's blog, which rated me as an ENFJ (Extraverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, Judging) Other famous ENFJ's include King David from the Bible. Take it and leave a comment on your type. It takes about 5 minutes. At the bottom, it lists personality types that would be friends with this personality type INFJ, which happens to be Will's personality type. I guess I'll keep him as my friend now.

My Mom - Update

I just got off the phone with my Dad regarding the results of my Mom's recent cat-scan following her chemotherapy. The great news is that her pancreas looks good. The bad news is that they found some spots on her liver. One is about an inch in diameter, the other three are smaller. They don't know if they're malignant for sure, but they look like the could be. They're doing a biopsy tomorrow morning and send the results off for further testing, which we'll get back in a week or so. If they find that the spots are malignant, they'll have to look at what to do.

I'm pretty bummed about all of this. Please pray for my Mom and family.

The Megapixel Myth

Good article on the The Megapixel Myth with Digital Cameras. In order to see a real improvement, you need to increase by 4x the number of megapixels (i.e. to see a difference from a 2MP camera, you'd need to go to 8MP)
The megapixel myth was started by camera makers and swallowed hook, line and sinker by camera measurebators. Camera makers use the number of megapixels a camera has to hoodwink you into thinking it has something to do with camera quality. They use it because even a tiny linear resolution increase results in a huge total pixel increase, since the total pixel count varies as the total area of the image, which varies as the square of the linear resolution. In other words, an almost invisible 40% increase in the number of pixels in any one direction results in a doubling of the total number of pixels in the image. Therefore camera makers can always brag about how much better this week's camera is, with even negligible improvements.

Greg and Kyle

I made my way up to Cleveland after the training in Columbus today and headed over to my friend and co-worker Greg Kandra's house for dinner. Apparently his four month old son loves beer as much as his Dad.

On a side note, the people in the class loved the dollar-store toys, including the porcelain orange.

My Mom and Nate

My Mom had an MRI last week to see the impact of her last round of chemotherapy. She finds out Thursday where things stand. On Friday, Nate's going in for a procedure on his stomach. They knock him out, snake a tube down his stomach to look at some of the damage and then biopsy the tissue. He's had it done once before, and knows what to expect, but hopefully this is the last. Please take a sec and pray for both my Mom and Nate.

#3242

Here's thing #3432 that I've learned in youth ministry that applies to my job in the private sector: People love crap from dollar stores. I've used dollars store stuff in my youth group for games, random prizes and just general fun junk. I'm conducting some training tomorrow for my company and nothing keeps peoples attention like getting free stuff. I don't have any cool corporate swag to give away, so I stopped at the dollar store in town to get some random junk - ranging from a porcelain orange to a set of poker chips. Ohio has the greatest dollar stores in the country. You gotta love the Dollar Tree.

Dicurci

I'm in Columbus today to conduct training for a new offering my team is rolling out across the country. I was on the phone with Ken Buck when he mentioned that Mike Dicurci lives in Columbus. I gave him a call, and we got together for a beer and to catch up. Mike just got his masters in Tuba and his wife is getting her PhD in English from Ohio State. We had a good time catching up, talking about church stuff, camp and youth group stuff. I got to know Mike through Buck at camp Velocity over the years and Mike and I get together on average once a year when either of us is in town.

Incidentally, Ken Buck has volunteered to help my brother/sister-in-law Ed & Stacy move on the 13th when they arrive in Dayton. As you may know, Stacy passed her bar exam and they bought a house down in Dayton, Ohio. The Kurt moving crew is coming to help them load up and Ken will be there to help unload. You gotta love the man's heart to help total strangers move.
