Gloria Deus

On the front page of the paper, I saw a link to an Article in the Detroit News talking about the band Gloria Deus, which one of the kids whose been in my youth group since 6th grade, Justin Smith (smiley one on the far right), plays drums. Their band played last Sunday at Ground Zero (our youth church).

Rock band Gloria Deus is among the Battle's earliest entrants. Hailing from South Lyon, the four-piece features deep lyrics and earthy arrangements centered around the vibrato-laden vocals of rhythm guitarist Mike Tooman.

Lead guitarist Matt Justice says the band takes its name from a field where a new church is being built. "It's a Latin phrase. It means 'Glory to God,' " says Justice, 16.

He says that, though Gloria Deus performs traditional-sounding rock, they also have a spiritual side. "We have some songs that are Christian," he says. "It's kind of like U2, they're a secular band, but they play Christian songs. We're sort of both."
