Will, Dan and I headed downtown Detroit to the Gem Theater about 3:30. After shelling out $20 for parking, we waited in line in the rain for a while until people started to move inside. We were about 50 people back in line and they let the first 25 people in. From there they announced that the rest of us were hosed. Apparently there were two lines, one for the house guests, and one for us losers. We found out that our group wasn't going to be able to actually be in the theater to see the show. Instead, we ended up in the second studio where The Four Tops were performing. After standing in line for two hours, they let us up in to basically watch the show on the TV monitors and see the band perform. Will and I wanted to bolt, but Dan wanted to stick around and stand up for another couple hours, because he hadn't been standing up long enough already. Jessica Alba and Anthony Anderson were on, as was Barry Sanders. We ended up sticking around and watched the show. Around 8, The Four Tops came in and played for a while. Dan, Will and I ended up standing next to Jimmy Kimmell's dad and Sara Silverman, a pretty funny comedian (in School of Rock, three year SNL cast member and comedian), who happens to be Jimmy Kimmell's girlfriend. After the band played a few songs, I got a chance to talk to Sara and shake her hand. My brush with fame.
Afterwards, the three of us walked around downtown Detroit to the Superbowl experience. I can't believe how great Detroit looked. It was clean and well lit up with giant murals projected on buildings. The renissance center looked very cool with lighting and banners on it. Everywhere you went there were bands playing and tents setup with food and drinks. Apparently there's an open container law so that you could walk around downtown with a beer in hand. It was packed down there, wall to wall people. Can't imagine how busy it'll be tomorrow.
Update: I Tivo'd and watched the episode last night, and Dan, Will and I made it on TV during a few of the audience shots during the Four Tops performance.
