TurboTax Sucks

If you pay $30 for TurboTax Software, you really don't expect it to charge you an additional $30 to file electronically, do you? I didn't. Funny how they don't advertise that part of it. You can file online through the IRS's free sites for free and get the exact same thing. Look at me, giving TurboTax my money like a sucker.

I just found that out as well. The real kick in the groin is that we owe money to the Feds and State. Looks like I'm not filing until April 15th this year!

If you look at the TurboTax box, it states that efiling is extra. Look on the back of the box at top.

We encourage you to file through the www.irs.gov site if you qualify. The criteria entitles almost 70% of all filers to file for free.

In response to another post about having to pay the IRS, there is not need to wait until April 15 to file. Using TurboTax, you can file now and pay anytime up to April 17 (because the 15th is on a Friday). We'll even automatically direct debit your account on the 17th if you elect.

The same thing happened to me! I will NEVER use Turbo Tax again and will spread the word to as many people as will listen.

TurboTax sucks. I E-filed and upon a successful transmission I was then prompted to "print your required documents". I choose File -> Save from the menu and when that completed I choose to print the documents. After the first page came out of the printer we lost power. Ok, no problem I thought. I restarted the computer and relaunched TurboTax only to be presented with Error 510 which means that the .tax file is corrupt and that I would need to create new returns. The problem is that getting back to the "print your required documents" page is post E-filing. However I had already successfully E-Filed. So I'm not going to E-File again. Now, I have no idea what these so-called "required documents" are. I spent an hour on the phone with Intuit and they wouldn't tell me. I then spent another hour on the phone with the IRS and they couldn't tell me either. the IRS' solution was to tell Intuit to cancel the transaction and use TaxAct instead. Ha! Even the IRS doesn't like TurboTax :-)

BTW, both Intuit and the IRS agreed that I DO NOT need to send form 8453-OL because I choose to use a PIN. So I got that going for me. :-)

What a bunch of clowns.

I wantd to use TurboTax but had a question first. I could not find the answer to my question and called the "customer service" number. I got someone in India or Pakistan who I could barely understand. She was also rude. She had no clue as to what I was asking, which should have been a relatively straightforward question about the software. She then transferred me to another number where I was on hold for 20 minutes before hanging up. In other words, they have no customer service. You are basically on your own. I called H&R block, spoke to someone in America, and was helped immediately.

I just completed a complex return using Turbotax which included busines and personal earnings. It went fairly smoothly until the end, when it was apparent they really wanted to charge me an extra $20 to electronically file my state return. They make it confusing to choose not to do this and to print out for mailing. What is printed out is incomplete and does not include the required federal return as well. Further, I asked for direct deposit as for federal but they would not move over the banking info to my state mail-in form. They also make a strong case during use to pay extra for reviews and audits. Still cheaper than going to my regular preparer but I feel disappointed that they apparently do not feel I paid enough with the software to provide a complete service.

Fire a bunch of people or find a new job yet?

What happened to Turbo Tax?
The software engineering required to squeeze money out of your customers put you behind? I hope that the "Now Free! 5 Federal E-files and Unlimited Returns" sticker on the box trumps the license agreement which states one free printed and E-file return.

After the past 3 or 4 years of using Turbo Tax to satisfyingly file my returns your company gave me Turbo Tax 2008 Home and Business.

So far I've installed and uninstalled it to my PC four times as instructed to attempt to repair Error 5641 "could not configure the product update system." Ridiculously slow process, btw, easily 10 minutes for each install.

Turtle Tax.

In the middle of that, I tried to instead install the program to my laptop. Four times. The installer won't get past installing ".net 2.0 SP1" so that didn't work either.

Finally gave up and ignored the failed update problem so that I could at least print a form 1099. Golf clap, because that actually worked.

Next, I was curious to see how buying a new company truck would impact my taxes. Couldn't do that either, the required form is a pending update from Turbo Tax. Pending update? It's f'n March 1. Hopefully the update engine will be fixed by the time the form is available.

I'm three hours in and I've been able to complete two forms.

The way things are going, I'll be finishing my taxes about April 14th and returning Turtle Tax to where I bought it as some small retribution for costing as much time as doing my taxes by hand and $80 more.

This would be a great time for another company to bury Intuit.

But don't fire the tech in Arizona that spent at least two hours on the phone with me trying to get Turbo Tax to work on my PC. Much of that had me doing other things around the house while the computer was doing its thing.

It still doesn't work but it is getting along with my lap top, thanks to some of the steps he had me try with my desktop.

He left me with a code to allow me to use the online version if I can't get the most current version that he had me download to work with my desktop.

I run a business so I need either 8-10 hours to study the IRS forms and instructions and do my taxes by hand or a program like Turbo Tax.

If you have a Windows PC and a relatively simple return, you may want to skip Turbo Tax this year or perhaps wait until the last second to buy or download the software by when they hopefully get the bugs out.

I'm still not happy about wasting my whole afternoon and evening but customer service at Turbo Tax has appeased me.

You pay to buy TurboTax since they have gone through so many forms and made the process so much smarter to ask you the right questions to maximize your return.
You choose not to pay them an go through all those forms yourself and most likely end up file inaccurately or missing deductions that will cost you money.
Or choose to use a tax service professional and end up paying more than twice as much as what you paid to Turbo Tax.
Whichever you choose you'll end up paying the amount you paid for e-filing because it's not Turbo Tax's but your state's requirement!

watch out! With them, it's never their fault. I was on the phone with the customer service for an hr. And the whole time, they just keep blaming me. All they have to say is they have no records of your submission and you're done. I am switching to H&R.

I just got a bill for nearly $90 from the AZ Revenue Dept.
TURBOTAX applied my FEDERAL pre-tax voucher payment to my STATE return. Wrong.
This adds to the insult of paying extra to FILE STATE ELECTRONICALLY.
Turbotax, one and DONE.

The worst part about Turbotax for me would be their customer service. I tried to pay a balance for my boyfriend and the CSR Ralph was totally oblivious to his job. I told him I wanted to talk to a supervisor and he said he was a supervisor. What a genius.
